Fisher House Christmas Project
Please join us in helping out military families in need.
This holiday season TAPP (Teaching Academy Program Peers) will be coming together in helping the Fisher House fulfill their wish list for military families in need.
About The Fisher House Program
There is at least one Fisher House™ at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House™ program serves more than 10,000 families, and have made available nearly 2.5 million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House! To learn more please visit www.fisherhouse.org

Scholarship
Scholarship
In Fall 2004, TAPP members created a scholarship for San Antonio College future educators. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage students seeking careers as teachers and to recognize their commitment and achievements related to this goal.
As the result of numerous fundraising events, the group has been able to award two scholarships a year to qualifying candidates.
To apply, candidates must meet G.P.A. and
hours-earned requirements and must demonstrate commitment to their career choice through service to the community.
Past recipients include the following students:
John Perez, Samuel Peralez, Tabitha White, Teresa Flores, and Elizabeth Salazar, and Teresa Rodriguez
TAPP members are also informed of other scholarship opportunities (for education and non-education members) at the organizational meetings. Sponsors assist members in the application processes as needed.

Community Service
Community Service
TAPP members volunteer during the fall and spring campus Career Day, sharing information on the SAC Teaching Academy Learning Communities program, future educator scholarship opportunities, and career exploration.
Members also serve as volunteers at the annual spring SAC Book Fair, dressing up as popular children’s book characters, reading children’s books, or offering arts & crafts activities.
Members volunteer in local schools at academic pep rallies and competitions/events as needed.
During the fall semester, members sponsor a local family through San Antonio’s Any Baby Can adopt-a-family gift-giving program. With generous donations from the SAC community, members help make the holidays brighter for a family with a disabled child.

History
The Teaching Academy Program Peers (TAPP) was founded in 1999 within the English Department of San Antonio College by Professor Norma Cruz-Gonzales, joined later by colleagues Mary Anne Bernal and Laurie Lopez Coleman as faculty sponsors.
Students expressed a desire to create a student organization to create campus opportunities for individuals to learn about careers in education.
Today, the TAPP members have strengthened their leadership skills, built friendships, and earned respect from campus faculty and administrators.
